Preston v Hull Preview

This is a game featuring two struggling sides although at the start of the season, very few people would have expected that. Preston, managed by Darren Ferguson, were tipped to have a successful season under the son of Sir Alex yet as it stands, the Lilywhites sit in 23rd position. Hull are not doing much better and despite playing Premiership football last year, the Tigers are sat just one place higher than their opponents in 22nd.

Preston look to be a side well and truly on the slide and following Tuesday night’s defeat to Barnsley, supporters of the Deepdale outfit are deeply unsatisfied with Darren Ferguson’s management. Many want to see the back of him and with just fourteen points accumulated after their sixteen games, it’s no wonder they’re frustrated. That’s not the only disappointing statistic with Lilywhites fans having to put up with ten defeats already as well as an avalanche of thirty three goals conceded. Both of those stats are the worst in the division and to make matters even worse if it were possible, they head into this one with just one win in seven. Their season was summed up perfectly on Tuesday evening when despite taking an early lead, a horrendous mix-up in the dying stages gifted three points to visiting Barnsley. Bearing all this in mind, Ferguson knows things have to improve for the sake of his job.

Hull meanwhile are having an equally torrid time. Their recent form is just marginally worse than their opponents with Nigel Pearson’s men recording just the one victory in their last eight. That gives them a return of fifteen points from their opening sixteen games – just one more than Preston. However, Tigers supporters may feel slightly optimistic for this one with their side showing that they’re at least hard to beat on the road having drawn their last three. What’s more, the KC Stadium outfit are the subject of a takeover bid and should that go through, their off the field worries should evaporate and Nigel Pearson should be able to reinforce his squad.

As for team news, it’s mixed news for the home side who look set to be without both Billy Jones and Josh King who are struggling with a virus and ankle problem respectively. However, having been illegible to play in their last game, Iain Hume is almost certain to be recalled to the starting line-up. Hull on the other hand will have plenty of injuries to contend with for this one with Craig Fagan, Paul McShane, Jimmy Bullard and Caleb Folan all on the treatment table. John Bostock is another absentee as he sits out through suspension, but Robert Koren could be included after he recovered from a hamstring problem.

In terms of a prediction, we’ll go with the away win. It’s hard to analyse a game with two sides in such poor form but with Hull at least having some half-decent results away from home, we think they could just come on top in a 2-1 victory.

Brighton v Coventry Preview

This fixture involves two sides who are really struggling at the moment, although it has to be said that Coventry’s predicament is far worse than their opponents. The Sky Blues currently find themselves sat in 23rd place, while Brighton’s position is slightly more comfortable as the Seagull’s occupy 13th spot.

The opening weeks of the season were certainly frantic for Brighton and after rising to the top of the league, there were some murmurs that the club could launch a second successive promotion bid. However, results in recent weeks have completely quashed that optimism and supporters of the Falmer Stadium outfit must be slightly worried at what direction their club is heading. Gus Poyet’s men have won just one game in their last twelve fixtures and after suffering a heavy 3-0 loss to Southampton last weekend, confidence at the club is reaching something of a low. Having amassed twenty three points, it would be fair to say that their position is still comfortable but Poyet must know the importance of things turning around in the coming weeks.

If Brighton supporters are worried, Coventry fans must be petrified at the predicament of their club. There was plenty of doubt about the strength of Coventry’s squad at the start of the campaign and it appears as tough that was certainly founded. Under Andy Thorn, the Sky Blues have never got going and approach this game having collected just thirteen points from their opening fixtures. Already, that puts the club five points adrift of safety and the pressure is starting to mount on Thorn. There was at least something to smile about after the Ricoh Arena outfit managed to unexpectedly draw against Cardiff in their last game, but in general their form has been terrible and they approach this fixture having not won in their last seven.

As for team news, Brighton supporters will see a change between the sticks after Steve Harper left the club after his loan deal expired. His replacement is almost certainly going to be Casper Ankergren, who held the position for the opening weeks of the season. Elsewhere, Maurico Taricco is out through suspension, while injury will keep out Tommy Elphick and Gary Dicker. On a more positive note, Gonzalo Jara Reyes and Vicente Rodriguez could feature after shaking off their injuries. Coventry on the other hand look set to hand a debut to new signing Gary Gardner, while David Bell has an outside chance of featuring following injury. However, Roy O’Donovan is a definite absentee.

Both of these sides have abysmal form heading into this clash, but we think Brighton’s home advantage will count for everything. In a scrappy game, our tip will be a 1-0 victory for Gus Poyet’s men.?

Leicester v Sheffield United Preview

Both of these sides should have been challenging for a top six place according to pre-season expectations, yet as it turns out both are struggling at the wrong end of the table. The bad starts means that both have already experienced a change in manager and with Leicester sat in 18th and Sheffield United in 21st, you could describe this as something of a relegation clash.

After a dreadful start to the campaign, it looks as though Leicester are turning their season around and Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men are slowly climbing up the table. When Eriksson took over the Foxes were firmly rooted in the bottom three but things have improved in recent weeks and they come into this game having won four from their last six. Those results now mean that they sit in 18th place on eighteen points although you’d have to imagine that the aim for this season is to make a serious push for the playoffs. Some of the players that Eriksson has brought in wouldn’t look out of place in the Premiership and with that, we can only expect a bright future for the Walkers Stadium outfit.

It’s a completely different story for Sheffield United though who are having an absolutely torrid campaign. While the appointment of Eriksson at Leicester evoked a turnaround there, the same can’t be said about Gary Speed at Bramall Lane. Since taking over just a few games into the season the Blades have seen no improvement and in fact look every bit more like a relegation-threatened side by the week. They head into this game on the back of three defeats and should results go against them, they could find themselves in the bottom three by full time. Their main problem is their lack of goals and despite investing heavily in strikers over the past two years, United have just ten goals to their name this term which is the worst in the division by quite some margin.

As for team news, Leicester may include Matt Oakley for this one after the midfielder was forced to miss their last game with a knee injury. There is a small doubt on Saturday’s goal scorer Miguel Vitor, but the defender should shake off a knee problem and keep his place in the squad. Sheffield United could be missing two players though as Andy Reid and Stephen Jordan both struggle with injuries. Both are suffering with hamstring problems and a late decision will be made on whether or not they can feature.

Our prediction can only go for a home win, with Leicester in excellent form while Sheffield United don’t know where their next goal is going to come from – let alone their next point. With that, we’ll tip a comfortable 2-0 victory for the Foxes in this one.

After both experienced good starts to the season, these two sides are looking to get back into some form after some poor results in recent weeks. Despite these results, both managers will probably be happy with their current positions as Barnsley occupy 13th while Cardiff sit in 2nd place.

Barnsley’s season has been highly inconsistent – or very consistent, whichever way you look at it. The Tykes have three wins, three draws and three defeats to their name after the opening nine games and that has put them in a respectable placing of 13th. Mark Robins could not hide his anger after his team let in three late goals to lose 3-0 to a ten man Reading side, yet the Tykes responded with a goalless draw against Scunthorpe. That result will have pleased Barnsley fans who have become used to their team performing badly on the road – with the club still without an away win since February. That’s meant that they’ve had to heavily rely on their home form which has so far been very good, with three wins and one draw from the four games so far.

Cardiff will also be happy with their season and the Bluebirds currently sit in 2nd spot. There has been much publicity over the season about some of Cardiff’s high profile purchases such as Craig Bellamy, Jason Koumas, Daniel Drinkwater and Seyi Olofinjana, although many of these haven’t featured over the past few weeks due to injury. That will probably explain some of the poor form that City have encountered recently, with Dave Jones’ men losing three of their last four. With that, it appears strange that they still sit in the automatic positions, but just one point separates them from 3rd place Norwich and Jones will know that form must improve if they are to keep their current position.

As for team news, Barnsley’s outlook is looking much brighter after various players made recoveries from injuries. Jay McEveley and Garry O’Connor are both tipped to return to the starting eleven having shaken off foot and groin injuries respectively, while Bobby Hassell could also be in contention despite being substituted through injury in the midweek game. As for the visitors, having been ruled out of Wales’ international games next week Craig Bellamy is not expected to feature in this game. Elsewhere, Steven McPhail is touch and go to be fit to play against his former club, although Michael Chopra and Danny Drinkwater are both definitely out.

In terms of a prediction, we think Barnsley could just edge this one. The Tykes have some very good home form and with Cardiff losing their last two games on the road, we think they’re there for the taking – 1-0 Barnsley.

Bristol City v Southampton Preview

It was thought that both of these clubs would be challenging for similar mid-table positions, yet following the opening seventeen games of the campaign that is not the case at all. Instead, Bristol City are battling down in the bottom three, while Southampton are performing in the opposite fashion and currently lead the division.

Looking at their squad on paper, it seems incredible to see Bristol City struggling down in the bottom three places. With the likes of David James, Nicky Maynard and Jon Stead being part of the squad, it would be fair to say that the Ashton Gate outfit certainly don’t lack quality and should be performing much better. However, following the appointment of Derek McInnes, the fortunes of the Robins have most definitely improved and while they remain in the bottom three, they are showing signs of improvement. The club have now not lost in their last four and having won three of those fixtures, it surely won’t be long until they exit the relegation zone. At the moment, just two points keep them adrift of safety, meaning that they could be out by as early as Saturday evening.

It’s a completely different story for Southampton on the other hand, with Saints seemingly walking away with the division. At the time of writing, Nigel Adkins’ men sit in 1st position having collected thirty nine points, meaning that they are already an incredible eight points away from 3rd place. To make matters even more promising, Saints also approach this fixture with some exceptional form behind them. Their comfortable 3-0 win over Brighton in their last match was their fourth straight victory, while it also stretched their unbeaten run in the league to eight games.

As for team news, it’s thought that Derek McInnes will attempt to keep changes to a minimum following recent form. With that being said, he has been given the option of including Jamie McAllister and Louis Carey, who both featured in the reserves during the week and are finally fit enough to feature. However, Jon Stead is still unavailable as he continues to sit on the treatment table. As for Southampton, there were fears during the week that Dan Harding would not be able to play after he injured his knee in training. However, he has pulled through although Nigel Adkins still has several absentees, with Dan Seaborne, David Connolly and Radhi Jaidi all poised to miss out.

This promises to be an exciting game for the neutral, with both of these sides in rich veins of form. While Southampton may be sat top of the league, we think Bristol City’s home form will count for everything and they will make things extremely difficult for their visitors. With that, our tip will be an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Ashes player preview – Ian Bell

If the game was decided on technical ability alone, Ian Bell would be up there with the best, sadly there are other aspects of the game he appears to struggle with.

The Warwickshire batsmen must be used to playing under pressure. He was burdened with high expectations when he first emerged as a potential England player in 2001, so much so that Dayle Hadlee labelled him as the best 16-year-old he had ever seen.

But when it comes to the crunch Bell struggles to make the real big scores that mark out the class batsmen from the rest. He broke into the England side in 2004 but became a regular in the summer of 2005, scoring runs for fun, 297 to be exact, against Bangladesh.

However, when the Aussies arrived he found life much tougher. The ruthless tourists targeted the inexperienced Bell and he struggled to make the scores his class should dictate, hitting just 171 runs in ten innings.

He did improve during the tour of Pakistan that winter and was named ICC young cricketer of the year in 2006. But questions always linger about his ability to perform when it matters. He battle bravely in the face of more fierce Aussie sledging in the 2006/07 Ashes tour, hitting four half centuries in what was a pretty-dismal tour for England.

But his failure to convert 50s into 100s remains. Over the past four years he has been dropped and recalled on several occasions, answering his critics with defiant centuries one week, before collapsing early on the next. As Bell heads down under he must know he is set to receive another warm welcome from the Australians who openly target Bell, a player they feel is susceptible to sledging. Anyone looking at Ashes betting offers may want to steer clear of backing Bell.

His place in the starting line up isn’t guaranteed and given his track record I can understand why. Australia is a ruthless arena in which to play test cricket and I don’t think Bell has the mental strength to consistently cop with the pressure and score big runs. The Ashes best odds suggest England will struggle anyway and they should avoid gambling on Bell’s temperament.

Those doubts should serve as a challenge to the 28-year-old however and he knows if he can resist the charms of the Aussie bowlers, he has enough shots in his armoury to score runs Downunder and be a key weapon in England’s armoury.

The whole focus for this game has now been shifted after it was revealed that Leicester boss Paulo Sousa has now left the club by mutual consent. With opponents Scunthorpe possessing such a tiny budget compared to the Foxes, defeat here is unthinkable and Leicester fans will be hoping that their season is finally ready to turnaround.

Some will say they overachieved last season, while others will hail the work of previous manager Nigel Pearson. Whatever the reason for last season’s playoff finish, there’s no getting away from the fact that this campaign has so far been an absolute disaster. The Foxes are bottom of the table with just five points to their name after eight games, with an astonishing goal difference of -12 to go along with that. There’s no doubting that their main problem is the defence which is leaking goals left, right and centre. Just days after a 6-1 hammering to Portsmouth, Leicester then conceded another four as they went on to lose 4-3 to high flying Norwich. That now means they’ve conceded a dreadful twenty two goals already this campaign and with only ten goals scored, it’s not come as much of a surprise that Sousa has had his tenure ended prematurely.

Scunthorpe on the other hand are progressing steadily. Many Iron fans are just happy to consolidate and establish themselves in this division and by the looks of things, that’s exactly what they’re doing. They may have had turbulence earlier on in the season having lost a manager, but having been promoted from within, new boss Ian Baraclough knows the club inside out and will know exactly what is required at Glanford Park. They currently sit in 16th position with eleven points although there could be a few disappointed faces after their last result, which saw the Iron spurn a host of missed chances as they drew 0-0 with Barnsley on Tuesday.

As for team news, Leicester have two pieces of information heading into this one. The caretaker team at the Walkers Stadium are preparing to be without Matt Fryatt who begins a three match suspension, while on the flip side Miguel Vitor returns from a ban and becomes available again. It’s a different story for Scunthorpe who have no fresh concerns. Garry Thompson and Jim McNulty will continue to sit out through long term injuries, but other than that Ian Baraclough has no new problems.

Scunthorpe are having a decent season by their own standards and while Leicester have struggled immensely, we think they’re due a win here. With the Foxes having the home advantage and having just lost their manager, we think they’ll be inspired to a 2-1 victory.

Just two places separate these two sides in the league and with very little distance separating the clubs, there could be a decent atmosphere at Glanford Park. Both sides have enjoyed respectable starts to the season and despite both being tipped as relegation certainties by the bookies, they both sit just below the mid-table mark.

Their lack of resources means that Scunthorpe are always tipped to struggle although the Iron should be applauded for their position of 16th considering the extra turmoil at Glanford Park. The club lost the highly respected Nigel Adkins to Southampton earlier in the season and it was only last week that Ian Baraclough was promoted from within to take over permanently. Baraclough experienced some very good results and performances during the spell when he was just caretaker boss and the Iron netted another good result by drawing 1-1 with Ipswich in his first game in charge after being handed the reins full time. All in all the Iron’s start to the season is impressive having collected ten points from the first eight games. However, they are still tipped for relegation and at 39, Baraclough’s inexperience is still under question.

Barnsley are one of the strange performers of the league although their supporters would no doubt accept their current position of 14th. They’ve become a highly inconsistent outfit and it’s become clear that Mark Robins’ men will be relying heavily on home form. The club are without a victory on the road since February and having conceded twelve goals in four away fixtures, it seems as though they have some serious problems at the back. However, on the flip side they appear lethal in front of goal and having scored thirteen already, they are one of the division’s top scorers. However, Robins will know the importance of resurrecting this away form and in Scunthorpe, he’ll see an excellent opportunity to jump start things.

It’s mixed news on the team news front for Scunthorpe who look set to be without duo Garry Thompson and Jim McNulty. On the positive side, Rob Jones should feature having shaken off a knee problem. It’s a similar story for Barnsley who are definitely without Jay McEveley through a foot injury, while Garry O’Connor is touch and go as he struggles with a groin issue. Should O’Connor not pull through, Andy Gray is tipped to replace the on loan Birmingham man.

Barnsley might be a couple of places higher in the league, but their away form is dismal and we fully expect Scunthorpe to capitalize in this one. A change in manager often brings the best out of a team and with that, we’ll predict a comfortable home victory for the Iron – 2-0.

No one could have possibly predicted the phenomenal start to the season they are currently enjoying.

Despite their home loss to Blackburn this week they remain fifth and fans could be forgiven dreaming of a European place come May.

This is a topsy-turvy season with everyone taking points off each other, regardless of financial muscle, history or reputation, and as such, it would be almost fitting that the most colourful of English teams should flourish in this environment.

But it isn’t a freak run of results which has propelled the Magpies to the position they are in, it was a combination of graft and guile and they look good Premier League bets to stay up.

In Chris Hughton they have a manager who is keeping everyone’s feet on the ground, while at the same time reminding his players that they are all worthy of their place in the most competitive and exciting league in the world.

He has masterminded victories over Arsenal, Aston Villa and arch-rivals Sunderland, melding measured aggression with skill. The success has been built on a strong defensive backbone, rather than the approach of simply outscoring the opposition adopted by former manager Kevin Keegan.

In Tim Krul, they have a young keeper with a bright future, and he has been ably assisted by a back four which has been disciplined and controlled, even against the stiffest of opposition – as Wenger’s side found out last week.

Midfielders Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton have set the tone in midfield giving both support to their defence as well as service to their an attack which has been ably spear-headed by young Andy Carroll. Despite problems off the pitch, a full international call up can’t be too far away, and based on his performances this season, would be well-deserved.

Newcastle just need to concentrate on the games ahead of them and ensure their good work isn’t undone.

Meanwhile, the Hull City betting suggests they should be able to stabilise their position in the Championship after they were taken over.

However, it could be several seasons before they come close to returning to the Premier League.

QPR v Millwall Preview

Every season there seems to be a side who runs away with the title and by the looks of things so far, QPR could well be that team this year. The R’s are already six points clear at the top of the table and just can’t stop scoring – with twenty three goals to their name already. Millwall have pulled up a few surprises this term though and with the added spice of this being a London derby, don’t be surprised if they give the home side a few problems here.

You can run out of superlatives describing QPR’s season so far and it looks as though Neil Warnock is well on his way to adding another promotion to his C.V. The R’s financial power was always going to give them a huge advantage once they got the right man in charge and in Warnock, they have someone who has seen everything in this division. Having played eight games and collected an astonishing twenty two points, it’s been an almost perfect start for the Loftus Road outfit. They still have a 100% home record and having bagged twenty three goals this term and accumulated a goal difference of +20, their form so far can’t be described as anything other than unbelievable.

Millwall on the other hand started the season in excellent fashion although in recent weeks their form has slipped slightly. Most newly promoted sides usually start the season successfully and with that, manager Kenny Jackett will be hoping the good early form wasn’t just down to a honeymoon period. The Lions are now without a win in their last five and having lost their last three, the club are on something of a slide. One of those defeats was a 6-1 defeat to Watford and with that, cracks are beginning to show at the New Den. However, they still sit in a respectable position of 12th and having accumulated eleven points from the opening eight games, it’s still been a reasonable start for Jackett’s men.

As for team news, QPR look set to be without the two players as Bradley Orr and Alejandro Faurlin struggle with calf and groin injuries respectively. Millwall don’t have too much to report either and Kenny Jackett just has the one issue to contend with as Liam Trotter sits out following his red card against Cardiff at the weekend.

When a team is on a poor run of results, the last thing they need is a trip to a QPR side who are making a mockery of the division. The R’s are clear favourites for this one and while Millwall have caused a few surprises this season, we think QPR will be far too strong in this one. Warnock’s men will continue their 100% home record and record a comfortable 3-0 win here.

This is a fixture involving two sides who were tipped for real seasons of struggle. Both are seen as small clubs in the division and of course, this automatically results in bookmakers labeling them as relegation candidates. It appears as though these predictions are correct though, with Doncaster rooted to the foot of the table while Watford are only several places higher in 19th.

It would be fair to say that Doncaster have embarked on something of a turbulent campaign and while the club are sat bottom of the table, a lot of their fans won’t be too concerned about relegation. A couple of months ago this may have been the case, but there have been several off the field movements that have brought the Keepmoat Stadium into the limelight in recent times. Using a scheme devised by Willie McKay, Rovers have received several high profile players without breaking the bank with their wage structure. The likes of El-Hadji Diouf, Carl Ikeme, Habib Beye, Marc-Antoine Fortune and Herold Goulon have all joined the club in recent weeks, making their squad appear extremely strong on paper. However, at the moment this work in the transfer market does not appear to be paying off, with Dean Saunders’ men approaching this fixture having lost their last two games.

Watford meanwhile find themselves seven points ahead of their opponents, meaning that this game is of huge significance in their bid to avoid the drop. The Hornets should certainly carry some confidence into the clash though after recording some impressive results in their recent games. They managed to beat Portsmouth 2-0 in their last game, while they have also recorded victories over the likes of Peterborough and Brighton in recent weeks. Those results mean that they have won three out of their last four games and should they manage to improve that run on Saturday, they really will have a lot of breathing space between them and the drop zone.

On the team news front, Doncaster are preparing to give debuts to several of their new players with Habib Beye, Marc-Antoine Fortune and Herold Goulon all in contention. However, Dean Saunders also has a couple of problems and will not be able to select Shelton Martis or Pascal Chimbonda, as hip and groin injuries hinder them. Watford approach the clash with several concerns as well, with Sean Dyche missing Martin Taylor and Stephen McGinn through injuries while Lloyd Doyley is clashed as a doubt. To make matters worse, Jonathan Hogg is also unavailable as he serves a ban.

The form book suggests that Watford should be easy victors here, but we are going against that philosophy. Doncaster have been boosted with several high profile signings in recent times and with Rovers also holding the home advantage, our tip will be a 2-1 victory for Dean Saunders’ men.

Both of these sides were playing top flight football last season and bearing that in mind, one would think that both would be serious contenders for automatic promotion. However, it hasn’t worked like that for either and at the time of writing, both sides are sat outside of the top six. However, with Blackpool sat in 7th position and Birmingham just one place lower in 8th, that is something that could certainly change this weekend.

Having completely reshaped their squad during the summer, nobody knew what quite to expect from Blackpool. It would be fair to say that the Seasiders have been fairly inconsistent so far although their form has definitely picked up in recent weeks and they approach this game sat just one point away from the playoff positions. The club have won three out of their last four fixtures and with one of those results being a 5-0 away victory against Leeds, Ian Holloway’s men are certainly showing signs of improvement and it looks as though they could break into the playoff positions very soon.

Birmingham meanwhile are just one point worse off than their opponents although after playing two games less, they are most definitely in a very healthy position. Europa League commitments mean that the Blues have had to rearrange several fixtures this term and this of course reflects badly on their league position. However, after collecting twenty five points from their opening fifteen games they are still in the playoff hunt and just like Blackpool, a victory this weekend could even propel them into the top six. It could be said that recent form for Chris Hughton’s men has been slightly inconsistent, although the Blues did manage to beat Burnley in their last encounter after drawing 1-1 with Peterborough in the game before that.

There’s not much to report in the way of team news although Blackpool striker Lomana LuaLua is hopeful of regaining his place in Ian Holloway’s starting eleven after being dropped for the last clash. However, Holloway does not have any fresh injury concerns to contend with and after recent form, he may decide to keep changes to a minimum. Birmingham on the other hand will hand late fitness tests to Liam Ridgewell and Morgaro Gomis as the duo recover from thigh and calf injuries. On a more negative note, Chris Hughton still won’t be able to rely on Jordan Mutch as he struggles with an ankle problem.

As for a prediction, our tip is going to be a victory for the Seasiders. Blackpool have pieced together some good form in recent weeks and while Birmingham have amassed a similar number of points, we think the home advantage will count for everything – 2-0 Blackpool.

Race is on for Champions League places

Although the season is only five games old, certain battles are beginning to play out. It looks like the big three of Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal will challenge for title again, while the battles for European places and relegation are already taking shape and they look as though they are going to be tightly fought. If the top three stay where they are, it leaves one all important Champions League place available. Although other teams will claim they are in the battle for fourth spot, the Betfair Football odds suggest it will be a two horse race between Tottenham and Manchester City.

It’s not known what targets the Man City owners have set Roberto Mancini for the season, but it’s pretty safe to say a Champions League place is up there, along with some kind of silverware. With City being dumped out of the Carling Cup by West Brom, their options for success are dwindling. The Europa League and FA Cup seem like Mancini’s only real chance of winning a trophy this campaign. Mancini will probably be focusing the majority of his efforts into claiming that Champions League spot, even though the Italian is still publically claiming to still be in the title race.

Tottenham could well suffer from their own success last season, the Champions League will push Harry Redknapp’s squad to their absolute limits and their league form could suffer as a result. When Spurs played Werder Bremen in their opening group game, they lost their next league game to Wigan, in a tired looking display. If this Spurs squad can’t handle competing on both fronts then they could be in for trouble. It’s fair to say Mancini’s Man City would sacrifice their Europa League campaign if it interfered with their quest for Champions League football.

Although some people will no doubt make Aston Villa betting tips to make fourth, they look set for a transitional season. However, there is another team who would like to think of themselves as in the race for that fourth spot, Liverpool. After the nightmare start, Roy Hodgson’s men don’t look capable of mixing it with the big boys this season. There are lots of harness racing betting opportunities this weekend across Australia, with fourteen meetings scheduled over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Friday afternoon’s action comes courtesy of Warragul, with seven races, and Wagga, who host a six-race card. Gloucester Park and Melton Park both stage nine races during the evening, with eight contests at Menangle Park, Gold Coast and Globe Derby respectively.

There are a host of feature races on Friday with the $35,000 Group 3 Brennan Memorial over 2536m at Gloucester Park the highlight. Has The Answers, trained by Tony Svilicich and driven by Chris Lewis, will be a short-priced favourite to record his fifth victory in a row.

The first of two $20,000 prizes at Melton Park is the City of Ballarat Claiming Masters Final over 2240m. Notaswethort got an undisputed lead on his way to victory in last week’s heat and another easy run from the front will see him difficult to beat. The other heat winner from last week, That’s Mister Ali, is unlikely to be suited by a steady tempo but will be staying on at the end. The Preux Chevalier Free For All is also over 2240m and a competitive contest is on the cards. Cincinnati Kid and Karlsruhe will be difficult to get by, being drawn one and two respectively. Which order they finish in is open to question, however, with Karlsruhe attempting to go from gate to wire.

There are also two $20,000 races at Menangle Park, with the Kevin Robinson Cup over 2300m taking centre stage. Hesa Buzzin was victorious last time at Harold Park beating Twelve Paces and Slick Bromac, both of whom re-oppose. Lonestar Legend finished eighth in the Miracle Mile back in November before winning the Golden Mile at Menangle Park in January and that form will see him go close.

Globe Derby returns on Saturday evening with a seven-race program whilst there are eight races at Kilmore, Newcastle and Kalgoorlie. The feature meeting is at Albion Park with ten races, where Blacks A Fake will continue his build-up for a hat-trick attempt in the $200,000 Queensland Pacing Championship at the end of October.

Two meetings cap off a great weekend of action on Sunday with sixteen races in total, eight each from Launceston and Melton Park. Keep a close eye on the harness racing results as they come through!

After reaching the semi final of the FA Cup and the final of the Carling Cup last season, Aston Villa will be looking to go that extra step and be up there with the FA Cup odds to win this campaign.

Will victory over Wolves spur on Tottenham?

With fans of rival teams suggesting that Harry Redknapp’s inexperience at balancing a squad will lead to their downfall this season, Spurs have successfully passed the first test in a number of upcoming challenges that will eventually show whether or not they are able to cope with the added pressure of playing midweek Champions League games.

Despite going one nil down against Wolves at the weekend, Spurs finished the game in fine style and showed that they are a side which contains plenty of fighting spirit. No one would have made Wolves betting tips to win the game anyway and the result is not definitive proof that Spurs are always going to be able to cope with the added demands that they are facing, but it is an early sign that despite being managed by a man who has no Champions League experience, the North London club are still moving in the right direction.

Should Spurs suffer any more injuries to their squad, they may find themselves in a trickier situation than the one they face currently, but they have so far coped admirably with the loss of their main striker, Jermain Defoe. However, against a side such as Chelsea, who are going to be far more capable defensively than the likes of Wolves, Spurs may well find themselves floundering in a situation in which a tired team devoid of its top players comes unstuck. Betfair Football Andy Gray suggests the side could struggle in the future.

At present, though, this prediction seems a little premature given that Spurs are only just entering the beginning of a busy cycle, one that is likely to throw up tougher propositions than a game against Wolves at home. If Spurs can overcome those tests, then we will see whether it is merely potential that Spurs have, or real talent in the here and now.
